I’v gotta be honest with you here folks, I’m a very angry nerd. When it comes to things I’m passionate about it becomes very personal to me. So as you may imagine I can get hot headed quite easily in this day and age, so when asked “What brings out your nerd rage?” I had to think really hard about it to whittle it down. I couldn’t pick just one so I’ve got it down to two – Michael Bay and remakes.

Michael Bay, where do we start? The guy has made a career out of mediocrity, he hasn’t got an original thought in that huge egotistical head of his. Yet, despite all this he is given millions to pump out unwatchable films that make me want to rinse my eyes out with bleach. I just don’t understand the hype around this man, “South Park” summed him up perfectly:

My second “Nerd Rage” is remakes, especially Horror remakes. Call them what you want – Remakes, reboots, re-imagining it’s all the same thing. I’m just sick of unoriginality and studios cashing in on ideas that have already been put out there, just for a quick buck. If you look at the independent scene it’s bursting with so much talent, not just great stories but great actors and directors, they have so much to offer yet are being ignored. It’ such a tragedy that studios would rather pay a fortune for a weak ‘updated’ script and an a-lister and see it flop (then repeat) than have the balls to put faith and finance into some young up and comers and see how it goes. Horror fans are very passionate about their fandom (as are many other people about what they love) and because of this you usually get a-lot of fan backlash and it’s only now in the social media age that studios are listening to fans but I feel it’s too little. It’s time for a change!

RANT OVER…………. For now!

Hmmm, the topic for this week is Nerd Rage. I am sure I am not the only one who feels this way, but the one thing that really sets off my Nerd Rage is when people talk like they know NERD when they don’t. For example, I love the TV show That 70’s Show but every once in a while they get their facts mixed up. I know this mainly since I am a child of the 70’s but because I am well versed in all things NERD. One example in particular is in one episode when Eric is trying to teach Red all the different Star Wars characters. One of the figures he holds up is Boba Fett, which as original Star Wars fans know that he didn’t make his appearance until the 80’s when Empire came out. So how did he have the toy in the 70’s? Also, I hate when you have a fan of the movies who really know nothing about the true origins of characters and try to debate me on what’s what. Let me tell you now, unless you want to hear me say “Hulk Smash!” you better be prepared when you debate the world of Star Wars, Wrestling, or Comics with me. If you are not prepared, I promise you my Nerd Rage will be released and you will feel my wrath. 3a6ad5b0-d191-11e3-8b08-57ff34def453_star-wars-that-70s-show-danny-masterson-lau

Billiam

When I was a young weeaboo I would get my nerd rage going when someone mispronounced a Japanese word. Now that I’m an older weeaboo, I understand that not everyone knows how to say foreign words. Older me has a vastly different nerd rage trigger. Bad TV. CBS has a new show! Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. I watched it. I gave it a fair shot because I don’t want to be one of those people who judge something without even trying it. You know. Like people who leave angry comments about blogs without even reading them… but I wouldn’t have any experience with that…… Me? Bitter? No way! Back to the topic at hand. I watched an episode and you know what? It’s the same damn thing as Criminal Minds. It’s the same damn thing as NCIS, NCIS Los Angeles, NCIS New Orleans, Law and Order SVU, and every other procedural crime drama. They’re the same thing, just with different actors. Remember Super Mario Bro’s 2? Does anyone remember that it was a reskinned version of Doki Doki Panic? That’s what these shows are like. I’m going to be honest. I used to watch them. But then I started to noticed that I could predict the endings early, sometimes right after the crime and the characters were introduce. I started to notice that each show would have the same episode. Not at the same time, of course, but maybe a season or two later would have the same storyline. They even have the same character tropes. It was lazy writing. What really gets me angry is that good shows are canceled to make room for more crime dramas or sitcoms (Big Bang Theory anyone?). Shows that were never really given a chance. Journeyman, The Black Donnellys, Agent Carter (maybe), Firefly, Jericho, Moonlight, New Amsterdam, just to name a few.

The good news is that I believe this trend is slowly coming to an end. While shows like NCIS and CSI are still getting spin-offs, there are other shows that are surviving. Once Upon A Time and Gotham are great examples. No matter what I or any other nerd things about them, they’re different. Blacklist and Blue Bloods seem to be written by people who worked on procedural crime dramas but have learned their lessons. But year after year NCIS or something similar is TV’s number one show and my blood boils. There are much better shows out there

But guess what? You can like NCIS if you want. I love bad TV too. Give me a six pack and an American Picker’s marathon and I’m set for the day. My nerd rage just gets flared up by mindless shows being so popular and original shows getting tossed like garbage.
