We haven’t done a new Nerd Talk here in a while (sorry I do get your emails) life and things out of my hands has made me spend time other places and not on the site … but I’m back and so is Nerd Talk. For you not in the know Nerd Talk is where SWN answer questions from you, the fans, about Nerd culture. This week we answer the question “Which comic book would we like to see as a movie?” We will try and get these back on schedule (fingers crossed) with doing a new Nerd Talk every two weeks. Thanks for reading and if you got a question to ask the Nerds you can email us at Snarfkris@somewhatnerdy.com.

Firestorm

This week’s Nerd Talk focus is on what comic book character that we would like to see in film. Well, since there are some Punisher movies out there, I am going with my main man from DC Comics, Firestorm. I think the story that is Firestorm can successfully be made into a movie. Hell, if written correctly there is a possibility for a trilogy. Firestorm is just a fun character that could make big cinema bucks for DC Comics if they take there time and do it right.

My favorite version of Firestorm is the original version created in 1978. This is the version that some of readers will remember from the Superfriends/Super Powers cartoons. This version dealt with the combination of two individuals to make Firestorm. These individuals were Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein. A nuclear accident caused them to become the great Firestorm aka the Nuclear Man. His powers are simply amazing. I mean, to shape and change matter into anything is no small task. An example of how awesome Firestorm’s powers can be seen in the New 52 Trinity War, he was given the task of making kryptonite and he accomplished that task which led to the events in Forever Evil (DC Comics).

I could write endless reasons why Firestorm would make a great movie, but I have to share this space with my fellow NERDs. So, I might have to expand my thoughts in a future post on my blog Derf’s Domain. Earlier, I mentioned that Firestorm could be a successful trilogy but never expanded on that thought. Well, it’s quite simple, there have been three major versions of Firestorm including other individuals with this amazing nuclear power. So, if the script is written keeping this in mind, each film could focus on each version. Well, enough of my babbling, let’s see what the other NERDs had to say.

Billiam

So which comic would I like to see as a movie? I feel like I’m writing a high school essay. I always repeated the question a couple times just to take up space. Anywho, this is a tough question, but it’s much easier to answer than what I DON’T want to see as a movie.

Astro City: Confession is what I eventually decided on after staring at my comic collection for a while, and it was for a couple reasons. The first being that it’s a self contained story so Hollywood won’t have to pull stuff out of their a… wait, I should probably keep this rated at least PG. Let me just say that it’s a fantastic self contained story from an established franchise but it’s one that hasn’t had a million rewrites or different incarnations. The second is that it’s not one of the big ones so it’ll be a fresh story that movie goers haven’t seen yet. Finally, it’s just really, really good.

confessor

Confession is about a young man who moves to Astro City to be closer to the superheroes he admires and ends up becoming the partner to a Batman-esque crime fighter named The Confessor. The art style has 90’s written all over it but the story is solid and holds up well. The Confessor and The Alter Boy, the young man, try their best to save a city as it plunges into chaos and turns its back on its heroes all the while trying to figure out who killed a young girl in an area of town called Shadow Hill. While all this is going down the kid has a mystery of his own he wants to solve. Who is the Confessor when he’s not saving the day and why are innocent people so scared of him.

I could go on and on about this comic, but I’ll spare you my blathering. You all should read it for yourselves. I believe that this would make a great movie and that it should star Richard Gere and Anton Yelchin. Directed by Michael Mann who directed Heat and Public Enemies. I would say Guillermo Del Toro but he’d just try and put Ron Perlman in it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’d love to see an “Evil Ernie” film! His origin story would make for great viewing but to really do the story justice I feel it would only work as an animated film, that way there’s no chance of some cheap CGI rearing it’s ugly head and making the film completely unwatchable. I doubt we’ll ever see “Evil Ernie” on the big screen but I can dream….

Nemesis-Nerd TalkAs far as comic movies go, it seems they have tackled everything. The iconic names like Batman and Superman, to all-star teams like the X-Men and the Avengers. Heck, they even did some underground ones like Bulletproof Monk and Kick Ass. But for my pick for which comic they should make into a movie, I would have to go with Mark Millar (who wrote the Kick Ass comic) and Steve McNiven’s, “Nemesis.”

“Nemesis” is a comic about a masked super villain, like the worst super villain…ever. He’s pretty much the anti-Batman, all the way down to being in an all-white cape and cowl. His plans are so evil and demented that they make the Jokers schemes seem like practical jokes in comparison. In fact, I think Millar pitched the idea with the words, “What if Batman was the Joker?” and his other succinct summary of “If Batman was a…” well you get the idea, not a nice word to say the least.
Why a movie about a comic book super villain? Let me answer that question with a question: Why should the heroes get all the love from movie going fans? I’ve always been interested in the villain being the main focus and draw for the audience. Mark Millar did just that. The comic is hyper violent, so the movie rating would have to be “R” or it would be pointless. It would be like making a PG-13 Punisher movie (which they’ve never done, and there are three of them). Luckily, Nemesis isn’t as well-known as Frank Castle and the story line plays out in only one series that ran for 4 issues in 2010. So there is very little room for creative interpretations. Not to mention that it will obviate the need for sequel upon sequel just to tell the story (but if it’s successful, I’m sure the movie studios will find a way). It is a great comic and should make for a great theatrical hit, perhaps in the slow movie times of March or October.
