How was your Christmas holiday? I hope Santa brought you all the NERDy things you wanted this year. In terms of ‘Tis the season for giving, I too am in a giving mood. So, this week I have several “gifts” that I will be sharing with you everyday this week. My first gift to you is an interview with a very beautiful and talented cosplayer. So, let’s get this party started shall we?
1. Who are you and where are you from?
I’m Katy Scarlett. I work out of the Salem/ Boston area of Massachusetts.
2. How did you discover cosplay?
I discovered cosplay when I was 13. A friend of mine was taken to anime boston by her parents and told me about all the freaking awesomel cosplayers she saw and all the great panels she went to. So when I turned 14, I begged my mom to let me venture into the next anime boston. I cosplayed Naruto (yes I know. please laugh.) I am beyond thankful for that experience.
3. I really love your Pin-Up Cap cosplay. How did you come up with that idea?
Thank you! I came up with the concept because I’ve been a fan of pin-up for years. Marilyn Monroe and Bettie Page are like idols to me. I realized with Captain America being alive in the 40’s, that not much unlike the USO girls in the movie, pinup art would have been created and inspired by his costume. I didn’t necessarily want my outfit to be “Female Captain America” I mean c’mon I’m not saving anyone in those heels and that tiny shield! So essentially the outfit is…fanart.
4. What other comic characters have you cosplayed?
Comic book wise, I’ve done Lady Thor and Poison Ivy and of course, Cap. But once upon a time, I did horrid versions of Black Canary and Harley Quinn. Next on my list of super ladies is Lady Deadpool.
5. Do you cosplay other genres?
I do! I’ve cosplayed anime characters, avatar the last airbender, Legend of Zelda, and (please don’t yell at me) My little pony. I have plans to cosplay many more genres in the future!
6. What is your favorite way to show off a new look?
Selfies and the internet. I post a lot of stuff on Facebook and Tumblr if I have new costumes or even just progression photos. The internet is the first place I turn to.
7. If you could work with any cosplayer or photographer, who would it be?
Honestly, the people that I cosplay with currently are amazing. I have a lot of friends who are fabulous cosplayers and designers and photographers. If I had to choose people to work with again, I would love to cosplay with Amaglam cosplay (She is my Twilight Sparkle in my Rarity photos) and I would love to shoot with Sweet Sensation Photography (She shot my captain america photos)
8. What are your plans for the future?
Haha so many cosplays, so little time. Cosplay wise, I’m currently working on Avatar Yangchen from Avatar the Last Airbender, Annie Leonhart from Attack on Titan, and Fiona from Adventure Time. These three costumes will be premiered at Anime Boston. (If all goes well)
9. Where can my readers see more examples of your work?
While I have a facebook page, facebook.com/gonewiththekaty, recently I find myself posting more and more on tumblr, gonewiththekatyscarlett.tumblr.com/ All of my costumes are archived on my Facebook page, and my progression and every day shenanigans and brand new photos of my costumes will be posted on tumblr.
10. If you had to pick one cosplay, which one is your favorite?
Choosing a favorite cosplay is a hard one. My favorite one so far is Cap, because it’s probably the best cosplay I’ve done, but more recently my favorite cosplay is my Zombie Hunter Sailor Moon. I still have A LOT I need to add to it, but it was the most fun to wear to a con. People were so confused to see Usagi with a gun and a cigar.
