Here we are at number 9 and in my opinion the worst film in the franchise. Sean S. Cunningham came back to finally kill off the monster he created, but I don’t think it was supposed to be like this.
Yes Jason is back once again, but not for long, he gets blown to pieces after being caught by the FBI and they think he’s finally dead, little do they know that his heart is still beating and it’s not the end at all.
This is where the film truly went bad, see if you can keep up with this. So Jason has been blown to smithereens, but yet his heart is still beating, when his blown up body & it’s pieces are sent to the morgue the coroner (Phil) is hypnotized by Jason’s heart and proceeds to eat it, with the heart eaten Jason’s spirit has now possessed the body of the coroner.
I’m sorry but that storyline is just truly awful, the fact that for 8 movies Jason was unstoppable, even coming back to life more than once, then in the first few minutes he’s just blown up and then the film carries on with supernatural elements.
We also find out in this film that Jason has relatives, a half-sister Diana Kimble, her daughter Jessica Freeman, and Stephanie, the infant daughter of Jessica and Steven Freeman. These relatives are the only people that can kill Jason, a fact figured out by a bounty hunter, Creighton Duke (Steven Williams).
Not only is it only the relatives that can only kill him but they also need to use a mystical special dagger as-well… yeah you read that right. So that explains why Jason kept coming back to life!
We also find out that Jason’s spirit & heart can be passed from body to body, making everyone paranoid about their friends and loved ones. And also when he leaves a body he becomes a sort of demonic worm.
The story is weak, the dialogue is weak and the acting is weak. It’s a shame that the series was to end like this (It’d be nearly ten years till the next film) it was a big disappointment to Jason fans. The only character in the whole film that I liked was the bounty hunter, a bad-ass anti-hero. But we can’t forget the ending, with Freddy grabbing Jason’s mask after he is dragged into hell, it would be many years before the film “Freddy VS Jason” was made, but this cliffhanger left fans on the edge of their seats.
It truly is an awful film, but maybe that’s what they wanted, to make an awful film so fans would stop asking for more?! Who knows but let’s just say if that was their strategy, it worked!
Miscellaneous facts about the film:
The patches on the shoulders of the Crystal Lake police uniforms state that Crystal Lake is in Cunningham County. This is a homage to Sean S. Cunningham, who is the producer of this movie, and was the producer & director of Friday The 13th.
In addition to his roles as Jason and the Security Guard, Kane Hodder also played Freddy Krueger’s arm in the final scene.
The Necronomicon found in the Voorhees house is a prop created by Tom Sullivan for The Evil Dead 1 & 2. Sam Raimi sent a letter asking Sullivan to forgive him for not asking permission to borrow Sullivan’s Evil dead ll props for this film. Tom Sullivan said he was not paid and would never again loan out props without granting permission.
This film originally had a flashback sequence and Betsy Palmer was proposed to reprise her role, but rejected.
Jason’s heart was used in From Dusk Till Dawn as Monkey Man’s heart.
The jungle gym in front of the Voorhees house was also used in The Birds.
The crate in the basement of the Voorhees house was a prop from the story “The Crate” from Creepshow.
This was the first film in the series to be handled by New Line Cinema after the series was moved from Paramount.
There were plans for a high tech video game based on this movie. The game was actually created but never released.
There was a comic book that bridged the gap between Friday the 13th Part Vlll: Jason Takes Manhattan and this film. It followed Jason after he was dipped in toxic waste in a New York City sewer, and his killing spree all the way back to Camp Crystal Lake. It also explains why the FBI has a task force specifically for Jason.
The original title of the movie was “Friday the 13th Part IX: The Dark Heart of Jason Voorhees”.
One early concept for this movie was “Jason Goes To L.A” in which two rival gangs would be fighting; when Jason would show up and start murdering them. This would force the rival gangs to band together to defeat Jason.
Tobe Hooper was originally considered to direct.
“Jason Goes to Hell” was released on VHS in both R-rated and unrated versions and on DVD with both the R-rated and unrated versions of the film on the same disc, the unrated version being three minutes longer. This is the first “Friday the 13th” film released Uncut in North America. Friday The 13th was released uncut in the U.S. on Deluxe Edition DVD in 2009.
John McTiernan was offered the chance to direct the movie but turned to down to work on Last Action Hero
At the end of the film, when the portal to Hell opens, Freddy Krueger’s glove emerges to snatch Jason’s hockey mask. If one accepts that Freddy was in Hell following his defeat in Freddy’s dead: The Final Nightmare (which was released in 1991 but actually set in the future), interesting timeline clues emerge. Namely, “Freddy’s Dead” took place (according to the beginning crawl) “ten years from now”. As noted, Freddy’s dead: The Final Nightmare came out in 1991. However, the “Nightmare on Elm Street” Companion website opted to interpret “10 Years from Today” as 10 years from 1989 (events of the prior film to the “Final Nightmare”, A Nightmare On Elm Street: The Dream Child). In any event, if “Jason Goes To Hell” follows the events of “Freddy’s Dead”, then it must take place in either 1999 or 2001.
In the film, just before he handcuffs himself to Jason and a part of immovable furniture, Creighton Duke says “Son of a Bitch, you remember me”. In the final film, this sounds a nonsensical. In the audio commentary to the DVD, it is revealed that the script at one point had it that Jason slew Duke’s girlfriend.
This is the first Friday the 13th film to have another Voorhees (other than Jason) in the movie since Friday The 13th.
Jason’s heart was actually made of gelatin and filled with fruit cocktail from the crafts services table mixed with black dye. Actor Richard Grant was still disgusted and reportedly nearly threw up during the take.
There is a substantial amount of male nudity in this film as with female nudity, probably most notably in the “homoerotic shaving scene” as many fans have come to call it. The reason for this that director Adam Marcus viewed the previous “Friday the 13th” film as somewhat sexist, showing only or primarily female nudity, and thought it more acceptable to show male and female nudity in equal amounts.
At the end, when Freddy’s glove grabs Jason’s mask, was meant to be an inside joke, referencing the fact that a screenplay putting Jason and Freddy against each other had been in the works since 1987, and had been intended to be Friday the 13th part VII. However, it took too long to come up with a good script for that film, so another film (Jason X) was produced in the interval. Since New Line now owned both properties, a joint project should have been easier to develop, but Freddy VS Jason took over 10 years to produce.
