So have you seen it yet? Probably. If you’re a big enough movie/comic nerd you’ve seen this by now because you understand a movie like this is going to get spoiled. Either some ahole will spoil it for you on purpose, a friend will say something without thinking, or you’ll be spoiled for it by some unknown source. My wife was once spoiled for an episode of her favorite show because a YouTuber said something randomly on her vlog, and the vlog had nothing to do with the show. It was about makeup. So if you care, you will have found a way to see it within the first weekend. But you will find no spoilers here. I guarantee this is a spoiler free review.
I must hand it to Disney. They did a great job with this. Not only was Avengers: Endgame a great film but they did a fantastic job hiding huge things that happened. I really want to impress on you what a huge feat this was. How many of the Avengers are known for spoilers and we got nothing from them?
If you listen to Future Flicks with Billiam, you knew that there were certain things that HAD to happen if the future of the MCU was going to make any sense. I won’t mention them here even though I don’t count them as spoilers since they’re so obvious, but just to cover my ass, I won’t. So even though there were certain things that any nerd who could add one and one and get two would understand, the question was, how? How was Disney, Marvel, and the Russo brothers going to pull it off? My fear was that they would simply get the gauntlet, someone would snap their fingers, and yay! Happy ending! But I’m happy to report that even though certain parts were predictable, HOW it all came about was a wonderful experience that kept me excited and engaged.
This movie made me like Captain America again. Much to Snarfkris’s disbelief, I disliked Cap post Captain America: Winter Solder and found him to be a whiny beeyotch. But THIS was the movie he stepped up and we saw more of the old Captain America, more of the old Tony, more of the Avengers being the Avengers.
There was a great mix of wish fulfillment and shocking events in this film. A few things that fans have been asking for were finally granted and things that I didn’t even know I wanted were revealed and blew my mind. Quite a few times I shivered in anticipation of what I knew was coming and more than once I gasped in shock. This movie made me feel feelings and in my oh so humble opinion, it was perfect.
Even though this was a three hour movie, there was still the risk that the story would be rushed. How many times have we seen a preexisting story get crammed into the constraints of a movie and loose out because of it. Even though Marvel always does a great job (let’s face it. Their worst movie is still enjoyable) there’s always that fear. But I’m glad to say Endgame never felt rushed. It was paced well and even when big events happened, it unfurled with reasonable stride.
The CG was top notch, which is very important for a movie like this. They help our suspension of disbelief. This is one of DC’s biggest problems. They want to do Marvel level CG but without Industrial Light and Magic as well as without Disney’s funds. You can have a great movie without computer generated graphics. I know this. You know this, but when it comes to a comic book movie from one of the big companies, you expect epic visuals, and this movie delivered.
Overall this was a well rounded movie that kept me glued to my seat until my eyes were swimming because I had to pee so bad. I’m warning you now, at three hours and one minute you have to do one of three things. 1: Have an ironclad bladder. 2: Don’t have a drink. 3: Pick the best time (You can find a spoiler free breakdown of the best times to pee thanks to IGN which you can find here) I have one other suggestion if you can pee fast and I’ll be vague to keep it spoiler free. When Hawkeye and Blackwidow are on a mission is a great time to go pee. The minute they start, go pee and don’t take too long.
Let’s wrap this up, shall we? Avengers: Endgame is one of the best movies in the ten year history of the franchise. The Russo Brothers, Disney/Marvel, all the actors, and all the crew poured their hearts into a film that is the perfect end to a historic film series. From beginning to end Endgame furthers a great story and wraps it up perfectly.
This is the end of the first saga. Some of the characters may carry on but it’ll be part of an entirely different and bigger picture. I find myself rating this movie with the entire first three phases of the MCU in mind. I know this is something I usually don’t do. I normally judge a movie by it’s merits alone and don’t figure in previous movies. Like Spider-Man 3 sucked but 1 and 2 were quite good, but the first two didn’t help Spider-Man 3. But for this film, I just HAD to keep the other 22 movies in mind.
I would say this is one of the best comic book movies ever. This movie was well paced. It was just as exciting, if not more so, than Infinity War. The acting was superb. The plot was well thought out. The whole movie was well executed. I’ve always preferred DC to Marvel, but at this point, Marvel has put the final nail in the coffin for DC movies. They can do a good one here and there, but Marvel owns the movies.
Avengers: Endgame gets an 11 out of 11
Where did Loki disappear to?
Thanks for the comment. I’ll cover this, and mention you with it, in my Avengers Endgame Thoughts blog which will be coming out in the next few days.
