Boys and Girls, Nerds of all ages,
I present to you my latest interview with a great cosplayer who is as beautiful as she is talented! Make sure that you show her some love after reading the interview and give her page a like. Enough of my rambling, here is my interview with Jennifer Kateri.
1. Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Jennifer and I’m a native Iowan with a bachelor’s degree in illustration and digital media from Iowa State University.
2. How did you discover cosplay?
I guess I always kind of knew about cosplay but up until last year I didn’t have the opportunity to get involved in large cosplay functions (such as conventions) other than Halloween, which is my favorite holiday.
3. I really love your Red Sonja cosplay. What made you choose her?
I actually made my Red Sonja costume as a special favor to my best friend. She loves the character and thought I would do a great job bringing Red Sonja to life. I gladly took on the challenge and had a lot of fun teaching myself how to make the armored bikini, which I made with supplies that I ordered from www.theringlord.com. It was surprisingly easy but very time consuming.
4. I also love your White Queen cosplay, which is your favorite comic related cosplay that you have done?
Emma Frost was a lot of fun to cosplay but my favorite thus far has to be Rogue. I always admired her character growing up. The added bonus is that I love her costume AND I don’t have to wear a wig (other than the white bangs).
5. What other hobbies do you have?
My hobbies other than cosplay and costume-making include: playing video games, reading, dancing, drawing, and building Legos. My favorite video games are RPGs like the Final Fantasy series and the Legend of Zelda. For reading, I enjoy fantasy novels like A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, the Dragonlance saga started by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, and of course comics.
6. Do you go to conventions to show off your cosplay or do you do photo shoots only?
I do attend conventions and love to cosplay while there. It is a great opportunity to show off my costume-making skills and promote any other artists that may have helped me such as the Eike brothers, Sean and Jon (www.facebook.com/SeanEikeArtist).
7. Do you do other modeling besides cosplay?
Yes, I have done a couple non-cosplay modeling photo shoots. I worked on a calendar promoting Controlled Chaos Arms (controlledchaosarms.com/ I’m featured during the month of March controlledchaosarms.com/files/CCA%20MARCH%202013.jpg ) and occasionally step in as a hand model at my day-job for a magazine publishing company.
8. What are your plans for the future?
I hope to further my skills in costume and prop making. This year will present many challenges with the costumes I have selected. If I progress enough, I’d like to offer more options for commissions. Ultimately, I think it would be great if I can make a living solely from my craft. Balancing time between two day-jobs and my freelance art is very tiring. I want to be able to focus all my time on my art.
9. Where can my readers see more examples of your work?
Right now I display the bulk of my work on my Facebook page www.facebook.com/Jennifer.Kateri.Artist
10. If you had to pick one cosplay, which one is your favorite?
Oh, boy…only one? That’s difficult but I’d probably have to say Red Sonja has been my favorite cosplay so far but I have quite a few new cosplays planned for 2013 and one of them may be my new favorite. I’ll be posting progress pictures and completed photo shoots throughout the year.
