A group of toy makers seek to use Andre Toulon’s formula, now in the hands of Toulon’s great-nephew Robert, to give life to a line of killer toys that they plan to unleash on Christmas Eve.

When it comes to cross-overs I’m never really sure what to think, so my expectations are always low when coming to watch them. I hadn’t seen any Demonic Toys films so I had to watch Demonic Toys first to give this an honest review, I won’t say anything about that film because I might review them in the future.

Before I start with the toys and puppets I firstly want to talk about Feldman’s role in this film. He often gets criticised by people in the industry, yes he’s made some bad films but who hasn’t?! His role as Robert Toulon was acted like something out of an old B-movie, which is usually a bad thing, but not in this movie! It works perfectly with the film and it general cheesiness.

Now to the puppets, as this is a cross-over you don’t get a big gang of them like before, we only have 4 puppets (Blade, Jester, Pinhead and Six Shooter). Some people complain about who was missing but just forget about them with this film, they picked the best for it. The puppets also have a bit of a change for this film, they’re turned into cyborgs after being burnt in a fire, which is actually quite cool to see, especially the terminator looking Six-Shooter.

One of the main reasons I think I enjoyed this film so much is because it’s the first film that isn’t just jam packed with archive footage, it’s an all new original film that FINALLY takes a step forward in the series instead of taking ten steps back. Alot of people were mad with the changes made to the puppets but I think it was needed, theres only so many times we can see Blade slashing at someone’s ankles.

By now you really should know what you’re in for and after the lackluster previous entries this film seems better than it is, but I truly enjoyed it. A film about killer puppets and killer toys fighting each other was never going to be a blockbuster hit, but it will surely at least leave you entertained.

From a Puppet Master fan point of view you can’t go wrong here at all, the Puppets are used a-lot more than the toys, and it’s always fun to see our puppets running around with evil in their eyes ;)

Miscellaneous facts about the film:

An unused storyline involved a girl buying the puppets from eBay and storing them in the Toyland Warehouse with the demonic toys.

Traci Lords was set to star but backed out during budget conflicts between Shadow Entertainment (Full Moon Pictures) and the Sci Fi channel.

Originally going to be made in 1993 (a separate plot for Puppet Master 4) but was scrapped after the new storylines. The plans have since passed over year-by-year until now.

Fullmoon originally planned to make a “Puppet Wars” Mini-series around the same time as ‘Puppet Master Vs Demonic Toys’ back in the 1990’s – however the series idea was scrapped due to insufficient funds.

Fullmoon Pictures originally set out to use a bunch of new Cyber Puppets for the movie. Toys were made – but were never released.

Charles Band received honorary credit as Executive Producer, though he had nothing to do with making the film.
