A number of brutal, werewolf-like slayings begin occurring in a small California town after the arrival of an unfamiliar motorcyclist.
I cannot believe this…
After getting my hopes up with the last couple of previous entries in the franchise they had to go and destroy everything with this release, what could easily be argued as one of the worst sequels ever made and no I’m not joking or over exaggerating. This film is a serious piece of trash.
It’s actually quite annoying that I have to write about this film because it’s one of those that you wish you could forget all about but here I am having to relive it all again, that is the only Horror here. How this film ever got released is a true mystery to me, the fact it was never given a DVD release says something.
The acting is terrible, the story is dreadful, the effects are laughable, the directing seems lost and put that with a story that drags and a film that seems to be over 50% filler scenes then throw it all together and you get this steaming pile if … well, werewolf s*@t! I just can’t get over the fact that this film actually got released.
It’s such a shame really because as I said earlier the last couple of entries in the franchise were really enjoyable and it was such a huge drop in quality that it’s just a huge disappointment and sort of taints the previous films with it’s terrible quality because now you’ll watch the previous films and know that this lies ahead.
“Howling – New Moon Rising” is a great example of how to not make a film, it’s not a so bad it’s good, it’s so bad it should be forgotten.
Miscellaneous facts about the film:
Is the only Howling film that hasn’t been released on DVD in the US.
Is the first Howling sequel since Part II to make an attempt at continuity. The film features archive footage from Howling IV, V and VI.
Despite the fact that this film states “Based on the novels ‘The Howling I, II, and III’ written by Gary Brandner”, this film is in no way based on any of those novels.
Romy Windsor is the only actor to play the same character in more than one Howling film.
All of the townsfolk used their real name in the film.
Clive Turner’s third time acting, writing and producing in a Howling film after IV and V.
The original idea by Clive Turner was to make the film entirely out of footage from Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988), Howling V: The Rebirth (1989), and Howling VI: The Freaks (1991), the idea was only half used in the final film in the form of flashbacks.
Since Clive Turner always wrestled people for control of the films (basically having John Hough direct Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988) and then re-shooting over half the film because Hough wasn’t hired to do the film he thought needed to be done), he decided to make his own Howling movie and star in it. And why not have it take place at one of his favorite towns and get all the actual locals to act in it.
Roger Nall was the actual director of Howling: New Moon Rising (1995) but Clive Turner kept telling him what to do so it became his film and Turner’s name replaced Nall on the directing credits.
