It’s summer camp as usual at Camp Manabe where the kids torment each other for fun while the underpaid camp staff provides as little supervision as possible.
Starring actors from the original film, this was long awaited amongst “Sleepaway Camp” fans.
‘Angela’ has escaped from the psychiatric clinic and is on the loose, yet elsewhere at Camp Manabe strange things are starting to happen. We’re introduced to ‘Alan’, an annoying brat who is one of the most annoying characters I’ve seen in film, I don’t know if the film-makers were trying to make us feel for him in some sense but if that was their plan it really didn’t work.
We also get another greedy camp owner, ‘Frank’, Vincent Pastore plays the character to a tee without going overboard. He also has a junior partner ‘Ronnie’, I was so happy to see ‘Ronnie’ back on screen, short shorts and all, and his character hasn’t changed one bit. Paul DeAngelo is still a stiff actor but it’s one of the things we love about him.
Another returning character is ‘Ricky’, ‘Angelas’ cousin. Jonathan Tiersten slips right back into his character, loud mouth and attitude. We also have favourite Felissa Rose, I won’t spoil it for anyone but it truly is great to see these characters back on our screens again.
It’s just a shame that the film falls short, don’t get me wrong it’s a fun slasher flick but the main love for the film is mainly for nostalgic reasons. The death scenes are what truly keeps the film rolling on.
“Return To Sleepaway Camp” is admittedly a let down but it’s still entertaining enough, even for a one time watch.
