Men capture the creature from the Black Lagoon and make him an aquarium attraction, from which he escapes.
This sequel was no surprise, the shock was it only took a year although things were different back then.
Unfortunately this sequel doesn’t stand up to it’s predecessor but it is what it is, a 50’s sci-fi/horror b movie. My qualm with this film is it took the predictable route of the monster gets caught – monster gets put in attraction – monster escapes and causes outrage, sound familiar?
Despite this the film does have some redeeming qualities, the cinematography is still brilliant and director Jack Arnold did a good job with what he was handed and kept some of the elements that made the first film a success.
In the first film, the eyes of the ‘Creature’ were a fixed part of the rubber construction of the suit. The actors who played the part of the “Gill Man” could barely see, if at all. In this film, the eyes have been, somewhat ludicrously, replaced with large, bulbous fish-eyes to assist in the actor’s vision.
Look out for a young, uncredited Clint Eastwood in his first screen appearance as the goofy white coated lab assistant who does the silly mouse gag in the lab scene with the monkey. There is also a rumour that in one scene Eastwood donned the Gill man costume briefly although star John Agar says he never saw it.
“Revenge Of The Creature” is not a bad sequel but it isn’t great either, but it has to be seen to understand the continuing story.
