Seven high-school friends begin their Euro-trip at the actual castle of Vlad The Impaler where he supposedly sold his soul to the Devil over 500 years earlier, but the decrepit castle’s past envelopes them in a bloody ritual.
I said it before, I absolutely love that one sheet. If I’m honest it was the first thing that drew me to this film in the first place, it really does grab your attention. So when I got asked if I wanted to review an advanced screening of the film I was ecstatic.
Full Moon Films is a studio with a rich background and a great reputation, especially within the indie scene. They’ve done some fantastic films over the years and with “The Impaler” all that carries on.
How awesome would it be to spend a week at Bran Castle, just you and your friends? Sounds awesome right, well think again. The film centres around the story of the legend of Vlad The Impaler, a legend that’s been played out quite a few times but when done right is never boring.
“The Impaler” is one of the more entertaining versions, it’s a simple plot but it works well for what the film is. Some people out there might be disappointed to hear that the boobs and blood has been played down in the film but when the blood and boobs appear it’s actually strengthens the plot, not try and cover it up. I found myself engrossed in the film and thought the characters where very well played out.
My only problem with the film was I found it a little predictable and would’ve loved to have seen more of the legend of Vlad played out but in all honesty none of that mattered, I still highly enjoyed the film and would be more than happy to watch it again. Full Moon has definitely upped their game with their recent releases and without straying too far from their indy roots, a hard thing to do but they seem to have perfected it. After watching this I wonder what they have instore for us in the future.
The film gets released on Halloween weekend, if it’s playing in a theatre near you then I highly recommend you go watch it. If you have to wait for the DVD then again I still suggest you should give it a watch, I know I was highly entertained by it.
