Get it? A Hardy movie? Tom Hardy is in it? Ha! I slay me. Okay, with that out of the way, let’s begin.

I wasn’t sure what movie to watch this week. There was nothing huge that came out since everything seemed to be waiting for this week and next week to come out. This week sees the release of The Maze Runner, This Is Where I Leave You, A Walk Among The Tombstones, and Tusk. My decision for last week boiled down to The Drop and The Trip To Italy. My choice was made easier after I found out my friend Glenn wanted to the latter so I now present to you my review of The Drop.

I had only seen the trailer once and even then it only gave a brief premise and I thought I was going to sit down and watch a mob movie like Goodfellas or The Godfather but what I ended up watching was more of a whodunit crime movie spliced with a character drama. Tom Hardy does an amazing job as Bob, a soft spoken and slow bartender who works for his cousin, a former gangster. The story, for the most part, follows Bob as he tries to simply do his thing but others keep getting in the way. There’s also a few subplots which the writers did a great job of pacing along with the main story and it all crescendoed into a single moment of wow, much movie, so drama… sorry… are Doge references even allowed anymore? But I digress. The culmination of everything at the end was so satisfying that I had to sit and think about it a bit after the movie ended. As most of you know I like to show off and boast that I saw something coming or how predictable a movie was but The Drop caught me off guard. There were some things I saw coming, but none of them were big reveals so nothing felt spoiled.

The Drop 1

I really liked the look of the movie too. The movie looked and felt gritty and cold and even the scenes during the day never looked too bright. It all helped set the mood wonderfully.  The acting was top notch which means it’s probably going to sell for two and half billion dollars… Minecraft references anyone? No? Fine. Tom Hardy was fantastic. I’ve seen him beat face in Warrior and The Dark Knight Rises. I’ve seen him be a suave bastard in Inception. And I’ve even see him be a clone of Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Nemesis! His character in The Drop was like nothing I’ve seen him do before. James Gandalfini was good, but he was still a Tony Soprano type character. Noomi Rapace, whom you’d recognize from Sherlock Holmes 2 and the Dragon Tattoo series, was good but didn’t wow me.

The only complaint I had about the movie was that part of the ending seemed to come out of nowhere. I was impressed with most of how it all came together but there was one part that just left me wondering how the hell happened. Everything else makes sense and even the surprises were perfectly understandable but one that one key part of the ending still bugs me.

Allow me to wrap this up in my usual fashion. The Drop was a very good movie but it’s not one of those films that you need to see in theaters so if you’re trying to pinch your pennies then wait. It was good though and the big screen is always nice, so if you have the chance, then see it. Otherwise waiting for Netflix or DVD/Blu-ray should be fine. The Drop was good but not amazing so it falls short of a 10 or 11 so you know that that means!

The Drop gets a 9 out of 11.
