The time I have been waiting for has finally come. Thunderbolts #1 hit the shelves on December 5th and I could be happier. With the whole Marvel Now movement, this was the issue I couldn’t wait for. I mean the Punisher, Deadpool, Venom, Elektra, and the Red Hulk on a team? Get outta here! What could go wrong? Well, I guess a lot but we will have to wait and see.
Issue #1 begins with General Ross trying to build a team of “anti-heroes” who are not afraid to do what needs to be done. All of these recruits have one thing in common, they are not afraid to kill the bad guy. The person that needs the most convincing in this issue is of course Frank aka the Punisher. He is not what we call a team player, but it seems Ross strikes a deal he cannot resist.
Deadpool, Venom, and Elektra seemed intrigued by the offer. And since the comic world knows that General Ross is the Red Hulk, we know the Rulk is on board with this new team. This series has the possibility of being the best Thunderbolts team in comic history.
The writing of Daniel Way is very clever. He knew how to make Ross appeal to each recruit for his team. I loved the banter between Ross and Deadpool. And of course comic fans are aware of the many talents of Steve Dillon. I loved his work with Punisher Max, Punisher vs. Bullseye, and the Incredible Hulk books. I gave this first issue a strong 8 out of 10, but I am sure my next reviews will probably be tens across the board.
