The Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno

We were asked to discuss our favorite TV series for this edition of Nerd Talk. Those of you who follow my posts know that I am a huge Arrow fan as well as a future Flash and Gotham fan. However, there has always been one show that has remained constant in my life. What show is that? Well, the Incredible Hulk show. I remember as a we little lad, waiting in anticipation to see what trouble Dr, Banner would get into, knowing that no matter what it was, his green alter ego would get him out of it. When I say I was a Hulkaholic, I am not lying. I had the toys, comics, clothes, etc… I could not get enough of the Hulk. Then sadly, the show was “retired” or cancelled.

Well, then the glory of the TV Movie kept the Hulk alive, no matter how cheesy they may have been, I was right there with the rest of the world watching Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno portray the characters that grabbed America’s hearts. Then, sadly, it appeared the Hulk had died and we have seen the last of the Hulk. I cried when I though the Hulk would be no more. Then the 90’s came around and introduced us to the wonderful Sci-Fi channel (know known as SyFy) and the Hulk returned with a vengeance. Reruns of the Green Goliath would play daily and on the occasion there would be weekend marathons for me to get my fix. The Hulk lived then and continues to live now in my heart.

I will always cherish the Incredible Hulk. I t was an important part of my childhood, adolescence, and hell my life as a college student. I used to cut class if I knew it was one of my favorite episodes airing that day. My point is, kick ass shows come and go, but there is always that one that sticks with you. Mine happens to be about a normal man who turns into a green “monster” when he is angry. Nothing wrong about that. I leave you with words of wisdom from the show, “Don’t make me angry, you wouldn’t like me when I am angry”.

Favourite TV series, holy shit, this was so difficult! I could name hundreds of TV shows that have been a favourite at one time or another, Red Dwarf, Porridge, Allo Allo, The Munsters, Bottom, Lost, The Twilight Zone, The Addams Family, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Tales from the Crypt, Blackadder, I could go on and on and on and on (I seriously need to get out more!). I know it’s cheating but I decided to pick two series (I couldn’t pick just one) I chose one from the past and one that’s present.

My past choice is “The X Files”, this was the first show to get me hooked. This was new for me, it wasn’t like a sitcom where I could miss a couple of episodes and it didn’t really make a difference, this time I had to pay attention to what was going on and I wanted to. I started to understand character development, plot twists and why people can become obsessed with a show. I devoured anything to do with the show (and admittedly still do) from comics to books to figures, I fell in love with the characters, I still think that ‘Cigarette Smoking Man’ is one of the best villains. My favourite character surprisingly wasn’t ‘Mulder’, ‘Scully’ or ‘Cigarette Smoking Man’ it was ‘Walter Skinner’, Mitch Pileggi just owned that role and I was seriously happy to see him return in “X Files: I Want To Believe”. My signed “X-Files” poster takes pride on my wall and at-least once a year the box set comes out for a spin, I also give it credit for bridging the gap between my love for monster cartoons to a new world of mystery and monster stories of a more mature nature and yes, I am still waiting for the third X-Files film, get on with it Chris Carter!

My present choice is “American Horror Story”, in this day and age we have so many more options to choose from when it comes to what we view, so this was the much harder choice to make but ultimately I picked this one because of the originality of it, that first series is still a slice of TV gold and I absolutely love the fact that each series has a theme, there’s no end of season cliff hangers or characters to leave a series, it’s all wrapped up in one season and then onto the next theme. Ofcourse there are actors and actresses that have become synonymous with the show such as Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Frances Conroy and Sarah Paulson but they each play different characters each series and as we’ve seen actors can come and go and it doesn’t make a difference (although I admittedly will be very sad to see Jessica Lange leave after this series). It has featured some of the best script work and story telling I’ve seen in a long time and they just keep you wondering what can they do next and each time fans have been blown away by their choice, I seriously can’t wait for the new season “Freak Show”, roll on October 8th!

Billiam

Ten year old me would have said Airwolf. Twenty year old me would have said West Wing. Thirty year old me would have said Smallville. But just recently I finished watching all two hundred and fourteen episodes and 3 movies of Stargate SG-1 and now, I have a new favorite TV show.

Sg1-title

Stargate wasn’t a recent discovery. I’d been a fan of it since it started to air on Sci-Fi (It originally aired on Showtime but we didn’t get that channel at my house). I didn’t love the show back then the same way I do now because I didn’t watch it in order from the beginning. The show was a lot more satisfying and made a lot more sense when watched from beginning to end.

This show ate up hours and hours of my life. I would get home from work and tell myself that I’d watch just one episode then start doing some cleaning around the house. Four or five episodes later I would turn off the TV and go to bed after promising myself I’d clean the next day.

Stargate SG-1 wasn’t some award winning masterpiece like Breaking Bad or Mad Men but there was something about the way all the pieces came together which got me hooked. When I finished the last movie (titled Stargate Continuum) I was devastated. It was a great ending. In fact, it was one of the most perfect endings to a TV show that I’ve ever seen. But the show was still over.

Stargate-Sg1

I urge everyone to give Stargate SG-1 a chance. The first few seasons are very episodic but are still tied together to by a larger overarching plot, which is more than I can say for lesser shows like Law and Order: SVU or NCIS. So push your way past them to make it to the meat of the show. The first few seasons are fun and entertaining but more importantly lay the groundwork for the far better and more epic later seasons.

Stargate SG-1 is science fiction at its best. It has a diverse and lovable crew and a imaginative means of transportation based loosely off real science. It has some of fictions most terrifying enemies like the Goa’uld (serpents that dive into and take over the bodies of humans turning them into glowing eyed psychopaths), the Replicators (tiny robots that feed off of and adapt to technology) and The Ori (God like beings from another galaxy which bestows superhuman powers upon their followers). And, best of all, it has a lot of replay value. If I didn’t have other TV shows on my plate I would have popped the first DVD in right away and started it all over again.
