Today’s focus on Flashback Friday is another classic from DC Comics. The issue I am focusing on is the Justice League of America #128. It was originally published in 1976. For those of you who were not around then, comics were only a quarter a piece. Boy, talk about the good old days, lol. I was two and wasn’t reading comics yet. Jus my luck. Anyway, this is a classic issue for several reasons.
The issue begins with Wonder Woman being reinstated in the JLA just in time for them to disband. Why are they disbanding you ask? Well, it appears that each and everyone of them where shown their deaths if they didn’t stop fighting evil. So, the JLA members decided to disband and leave rather than fight and die.
While the heroes share their stories one at a time, we find Hal Jordan in the fight for his life against Nekron. He manages to send a signal out to the JLA for help and this was the break Wonder Woman needed to convince the others to stay together. A great battle occurs and Nekron flees the scene vowing to return. What happens next? Well, you would need to pick up issue #129 to find out.
What I love most about the classic stories is how the characters are drawn. I mean Nekron looks no where near the way he did in the Blackest Night stories. I know we can explain that from the simple fact that he was a creature of fear so of course he would change forms, but it is still amusing to me. This issue was written by the talented Martin Pashko and drawn by Dick Dillin and Frank McLaughlin. The cover art was done by the late, great Ernie Chua. Although I do not have the complete story, I would give this issue a rating of a strong 8 out of 10. It tells a story of its own and I really do not need issue #127 to tell me what happened before nor do I need #129 to tell me what happens next. The story in issue #128 stands that well alone. Until next time, get your NERD on.
