Earlier in the year I posted a blog about the movies that were coming out for the following three months. I was going to post another one of those but after consulting my editor (girlfriend) I’ve decided to start doing them weekly. I know, I was really bad about the last two seasons of my TARDIS Talks but there’s only one way to get better, and that’s to try again. So please stay tuned as each week on Sunday or Monday I’ll post a blog about the movies coming out that week. This blog I’ll do one for the week of the 15th as well as last week, the week of the 8th, just to catch everyone up. Also please keep in mind that where you live might change release dates. The Huntsman: Winter’s War is already playing here in the UK but according to IMDB it won’t be released in the States until the week for the 22nd. Movie release dates are also subject to change but doing this each week will cut down on any errors, but it could still happen. If there’s a movie you read about that you really want to see, check your local listings.

When I get back home after my vacation in the United Kingdom, I’ll try and start a podcast for this too so stay tuned to Somewhat Nerdy radio for more.

Billiam’s Pick of the Week:

hardcorehenry_posterHardcore Henry: Motion Sickness the Movie! I admit it. This is a cool idea. I don’t know if they were inspired from the ending of the 2005 movie Doom based off the popular series of video games, but either way, they’re going the route of the first person shooter.  I want to see it just to find out if the shaky cam first person style will make me nauseous or not. The plot is basic and it feels like it was taken right out of a late 80’s early 90’s Stallone or Schwarzenegger flick. Henry is brought back from the dead but with all his memories gone. Now he must fight to find out who he is and also save his life from a big bad guy with evil plans building super solders. The plot is uninspired and all the focus is going into the action. The only reason most people seem to be okay with it is because of the new and shiny first person presentation. This is just like the games I’ve played on my VR headset. They’re short, easy, and unimaginative games, but the fact that it’s presented in a new way seems to make it all better. It looks interesting but I’m not pumped enough about it to go see it while on vacation. I’ll see this one, just not now.

image002The BossThe new Melissa McCarthy movie. Enough said. She seems to be playing a different kind of character in this one, but I have a feeling we’re going to get the same type of movie. If you’re a fan of hers then you’re probably already psyched to see this. She plays a “titan of industry” who loses it all and wants to get her position on the top back and tries to do so helping girl scouts sell cookies. Meh.  I don’t have anything against Melissa McCarthy. It’s just that all her movies feel the same to me. It’s because I can’t appreciate her like a fan does. It’s like me and Green Day. I think all of their songs sound the same but any fans of theirs can hear the difference in each song. The Boss doesn’t look bad. It just doesn’t look good enough to warrant my money for a ticket.

beforeiwakesmallBefore I WakeA horror movie starring the Punisher (Thomas Jane) and Kate Bosworth. They’re two parents who lost their child and adopt a new one. Trouble is that when the kid sleeps, his dreams turn to reality, which is all fine, until he has nightmares and they no longer stop when he wakes up. This one looks interesting, but I’ve seen NO hype for it. If it wasn’t for IMDB I wouldn’t even know this movie was coming out. This was from the same guy who did Oculus so it could be pretty interesting.

getmovieposter_demolition_2Demolition: A new Jake Gyllenhaal Movie! Yay! He’s great. The problem is that he can be too good. I saw Nightcrawler and ended up walking out because I was too uncomfortable. His character was such a disgusting emotionless human being that I just couldn’t watch him anymore. The fact that his acting could get such a reaction out of me is amazing. Though Demolition looks like it’ll be less intense. This one is about a man who loses his wife in a car crash and finds himself numb and unable to deal with it. He ends up finding help from a woman who works for a vending machine company who comes to him after he writes them a few letters about how he couldn’t get peanut M&M’s from their machine after his wife died. I really want to see this, but then again, I’ll be on vacation and I’m not sure if this is the kind of uplifting movie I want to watch when traveling around the UK.

louder-than-bombs-posterLouder Than Bombs: This one looks very interesting but I have the feeling that it’s going to fly under most people’s radar.  I say that because just like Before I Wake, I had no idea this movie was even coming out. This comes out next week! There should be previews for it already. Okay, maybe their advertising budget isn’t that great, but still I should have seen at least one somewhere besides searching for it on YouTube. This movie stars Lex Luthor himself, Jesse Eisenberg who is finally not playing a fast talking snarky nerd. This movie revolves around a family years(?) after the death of their wife and mother and how they come to terms with their feelings and also the truth behind how she really died.  I really want to see this movie but I may wait until later in April to see it with my friend Glenn. This didn’t grab me as a movie I must see right away.

Also Coming Out 4/8

Wedding Doll: A mentally deficient young woman working in a toilet paper factory falls in love with the factory’s owner but keeps the romance from her over protective mother. When the factory closes it could very well jeopardize the young woman’s romance.

Billiam’s Pick of the Week

Disney-The-Jungle-Book-Jon-Favreau1The Jungle Book: This movie has been redone a million times so what makes this one so different? Well, for starters it’s helmed by Jon Favreau, the brains behind the first two Iron Man movies. Second, it’s going the route of a modern day Who Framed Roger Rabbit, with a real actor acting along side a animated cast. Third, this one is almost fully CG which may or may not be a bad thing. Favreau was interviewed and he said that when the CG guys were making the jungle, he kept on having to tell them to make it darker more realistic. So at the very least, Favreau wanted it as close to real looking as he could get.  This movie also has an all-star cast with Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Bill Murray, Lupita Nyong’o, Christopher Walker, and Ben Kingsley. I plan on seeing this one, vacation or not. It looks like it’ll be fun, at the very least.

smaller posterCriminal: Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, Alice Eve, and Tommy Lee Jones. This movie couldn’t handle another big name. The 2008 film Taken starring Liam Neeson started this trend of older actors being action stars. I know, I know, Taken wasn’t the first to do the that, but it seemed to be the starting point of the movement. Now every year there seems to be one or two more movies to add to the list. Criminal is one of those.  Kevin Costner is the old man for this movie and he goes around kicking ass and it looks like he does a good job of it. This one looks like a watch, but once again I’m not sure if it has to be in theaters or not.

barbershop_the_next_cut_movie_posterBarbershop: The Next Cut: Really? I mean, really? Come on. Do we really need another one? I guess movies like this have their niche audience, just like God’s Not Dead 2 and any movie based off YA novels. I liked the first one, though I skipped it in theaters. They’re not terrible movies. I just didn’t think it needed more than one.  It feels like they’re trying to make these movies into a series like Friday but they’re just falling short. Friday and its sequels were hilarious. Friday After Next may have terrible ratings no matter where you look, but it’s a great Christmas movie. I wonder what past Ice Cube would think about modern day Ice Cube. Would he think that his older self is a sellout for doing movies like Are We There Yet? Or would he look at all the money he’s making and be proud? He’s probably been asked this before, but just not in any interview I’ve seen.  I’ll skip this in theaters and save it for a lazy day around the house.
