Hello fellow nerds! It’s the return of the Nerd Talk! In the words of Michael Cole this SomewhatNerdy post is vintage. This time around we kept Hollywood’s love affair with the remake/reboot in mind as we thought of films that we would actually like to see be remade.

The Question: Which Movie Would You Actually Like To Be Remade?

Raz

If you’ve read anything I’ve done for Raz’s Midnight Macabre then you’ll know that when it comes to remakes, well, let’s just say I’m not usually a fan of them, so this was quite a hard topic for me. But after some extensive thinking I finally made a decision. A film I feel should be remade is “Alien VS Predator”.

Back when this was released I was seriously excited, so excited that I even pre-booked tickets to watch it at the cinema. Yeah, that’s money and time I’ll never get back and lets not forget the huge disappointment felt by millions of fans who had been dying to see this film happen for many years. Sure it had some saving graces, the set designs were brilliant and the action was there but it was a typical Paul W.S. Anderson film, all style and no substance. The dialogue was disastrous and the story itself was so weak and it was obvious that “Alien” and “Predator” mythos were being bent to fit into the film and in most cases dismissed.

I still feel like there’s a chance that this could get a reboot/remake, especially seeing as we keep getting these “Alien” prequels and also with the recent “Predator” film (although less said about them the better). It’s been fifteen years now since it was released, I think enough time has passed now and the time is right for it to happen sometime soon.

The topic for our latest Nerd Talk is what film needs a remake. My decision is the cult classic, The Last Starfighter. I absolutely love this film about an “Average Joe” being a destined starfighter to save the universe from intergalactic war.

If you haven’t seen the movie, then you need to do yourself a favor and enjoy this gem. I, myself, love this film. I have been screaming it needs a sequel. The original was left off with an ending that could have introduced us to more films, but alas nothing was created fo our entertainment.

Shortly after the success of Rogue One, Gary Whitta was reportedly taking the helm of a remake of this classic film. As of now we have no news that can stand on one leg.

Why should The Last Starfighter be remade? Well, for NERDS like me, it is as simple as reliving a part of our childhood. For movie lovers it has everything a movie should have. It has action, romance, comedy, action, spaceships, classic battles, and did I mention action?

If handled correctly, a remake can spawn a trilogy of successful films that will entertain the masses. It is up to Hollywood to decide, but if it was up to me and my fellow NERDS, this remake would be on top of the list and I would be the first in line to see it in theaters.

All of us nerds have different specialties but every once in a while I’m reminded that we’re still all very alike. This time I was reminded by Derf’s answer because it was the same as mine. He did his first so I thought I would take the chance to change my answer since my first pick was already getting love. What was my answer changed to?

Why choose Flash Gordon out of all the movies I could have picked? Easy peasy. For the same reasons that I chose The Last Starfighter. If this film got into the right hands, say Denis Villeneuve, Matt Reeves, or Ridley Scott. Hell, let’s borrow from Marvel and get Taika Waititi, Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon, Ryan Coogler, or James Gunn.

In the right hands the old school campiness would stay in tack, the story would stay true to the original, and the effects would be brought up to modern standards. Movies have changed a lot since Flash Gordon came out in 1980, so I admit that I would be okay with some tinkering with the story if the spirit stayed true.

Just think about how Marvel works. They make fun movies and even a few of them are great movies. They know what needs to be done to keep the spirit of the original story intact while modernizing it. Take the new Spider-Man, how different is he from the one we all know but thanks to a fun focused movie, they do a great job.

That’s what I want to see for all of these picks. Not just mine, but from the rest of the crew. Keep the spirit, the memory, of the original but remember that it’s a modern movie and make the needed changes.

So what about you? What would you add to our list? Did we say something you agree or disagree with? Let us know in the comments.
