Chucky, the doll possessed by a serial killer, returns for revenge against Andy, the young boy that defeated him and has since become adult.
With the rising success of the series we all knew there would be a third entry in the series, but who knew it would be so soon.
After serious pressure from Universal, Don Mancini was asked to begin writing the third film even before the “Child’s Play 2” was even released. That’s this film was released only nine months after the second film. Mancini has admitted it his least favourite because he felt he was out of ideas so soon after Part 2. It’s sad to say but it’s true, it shows in the film.
With another film came another Director, this time Jack Bender took on the reigns, it would be his feature debut after doing a lot of TV work. If only Peter Jackson took on the project when he was asked, can you imagine what kind of ‘Chucky’ film we’d had if the guy who brought us films such as “Bad Taste”, “Meet The Feebles”, “Dead Alive” and “The Frighteners” had accepted the job.
Once again the film was rocked by controversy, it found itself in the centre of a tabloid panic on its British release, with demands of copies be burned. Journalists claimed the film had influenced two young boys in their murder of a younger child, two-year-old James Bulger, although it was later determined that neither had actually seen this film. Despite this the film still finds itself attached to horrible crime after all these years.
The film itself is not that great, sure it’s got it’s moments and don’t get me wrong them moments are fun, I just find it not as much fun as the other films and it does come across as being a bit forced. But that is just my opinion, I know people who consider this release to be their favourite of the series.
“Child’s Play 3” is a weak entry in the series, but definitely not the weakest.
